Woman day - Lombok

Every day, Indonesia generates around 24,500 tonnes of plastic waste. More than 80% of it goes unsorted, making it difficult to recycle. Unfortunately, a lot of this waste eventually leaks into the ocean.Women in Indonesia are at a substantial disadvantage to men, with data showing the number of female-headed households living in poverty is increasing while the rate among those headed by men is decreasing. Poor households headed by women are the poorest in Indonesia.Since August 2019, the Invest Islands Foundation has employed 10 local women in Lombok to collect litter from the beaches in Torok Bay. In return, these women are provided daily essentials such as rice, vegetables, and eggs. Often, they also have their electricity bills paid or receive a small financial reward. The plastic waste collected by women such as Ibu Runi is recycled to create new products, such as flower pots, bowls, baskets and hair combs. The Foundation deliberately hires females in order to promote an inclusive environment that coincides with its ethics and vision of gender equality.
