日本のロック~ポップス・シーンに今なお大きな影響を及ぼし続けているイエロー・マジック・オーケストラ(YMO)。結成25周年を記念した全オリジナル・アルバムの再発にあわせて、ライヴ映像を中心にその活動を振り返ったアンソロジー的な作品がリリースされた。サウンド面においては、細野晴臣と坂本龍一というまったく異なった資質を持った二つの才能の衝突で語られることが多い彼らだが、ことビジュアル/ステージ面に関していえば中心人物は、赤い人民服をはじめとするコスチュームを一手に手掛けたデザイナーであり、ヴォーカリスト、そしてライヴでレコードとまったく変わらない演奏(そのビートのタイトさといったら!)ができた唯一のミュージシャンだった高橋幸宏なわけで、本作もそんな彼の監修による作品となっている。内容も、パンク的な疾走感すら感じられる結成当時の海外ライヴに始まり、『フジ・カセット』のテレビCおM、ロシア構成主義の影響濃い81年のダークなステージ、一転してパステルカラーのサマー・セーター姿で三人がはしゃぐ「君に胸キュン」のプロモ・ビデオ、そして解散ライヴに至るまで、彼らの短くも濃厚な歴史を網羅しており申し分ない。高橋によるユーモアあふれる副音声は、秘蔵エピソードが満載で、オールド・ファンはこれだけでも“買い”だが、それ以上に映像そのものから感じられる“時代の熱気”に引き込まれるはず。彼らがシーンから隔絶した孤高の存在などではなく、アジアのローカル都市から凄まじい勢いで世界の先端都市へと変貌しつつあった、当時の東京だからこそ存在しえた時代の申し子だったことが分かるから。そう、彼らは東京を“トキオ”と呼ばずにはいられなかったのだ。そんなわけでリアルタイムで彼らを体験してない世代にこそ観てほしい。 (長谷川町蔵) --- 2003年03月号 -- 内容 (「CDジャーナル・レビュー」より)
