暗号資産ビットコイン（Bitcoin）の原理は、分散管理にある。国家や中央銀行から自由で、特定の個人や組織の支配を受けない。
ビットコインはブロックチェーンと呼ばれる分散型台帳で管理される。マイナー（採掘者）と呼ばれる人々がビットコインを使った取引を検証し、記録・共有されていく。
マイナーたちは「プルーフ・オブ・ワーク（proof of work、仕事の証明）」というプロトコルに従い、複雑な計算を処理する。成功報酬はビットコインで約10分ごとに支払われる。
膨大な処理能力が必要で、高性能のコンピューターと大量の電力が不可欠だ。
ビットコインに絡む2021年の年間消費電力は、128テラワット時と推計されている。世界の総発電量の0.6％、グーグル（Google）のデータセンターが2019年に消費した電力の約10倍に相当する。
当初はパソコンも使われたが、現在は「採掘工場」と呼ばれる大規模なデータセンターが利用されている。採掘工場が特に多いのは中国（65％）だが、米国（7.2％）やロシア（6.9％）にもある。
ビットコインに批判的な人が指摘しているのはブロックチェーンシステムの環境への負荷で、採掘工場が多い地域では発電により炭素排出量が大きく増加しているという。
プルーフ・オブ・ワークの代わりに、一定量の暗号資産を持つ人に処理作業を認める「プルーフ・オブ・パーティシペーション（proof of participation）」というプロトコルもある。
暗号資産イーサリアム（Ethereum）はプルーフ・オブ・パーティシペーションへの移行を検討しているが、ビットコインが採用する可能性は極めて低い
