さらに、プラスチックが劣化などとともに、細かい粒子状の「マイクロプラスチック」になってしまうと、回収をするのはほぼ不可能。
実際、様々な海洋生物の体内から、マイクロプラスチックが検出されているんです。
そして、サンゴも例外ではありません。
野生のサンゴからもマイクロプラスチックが検出されており、さらに、実験を行った結果…
サンゴが実際の餌よりも、プラスチックをより多く摂取したという事実が判明したのです！

The Clownfish and Coral Symbiosis: Jewels of the Ocean
The clownfish, with its vibrant orange body and distinctive white stripes, is like a tiny gem within the coral reefs. These small fish live in close symbiosis with a type of coral known as sea anemones, hiding safely among the anemone’s stinging tentacles, which protect them from predators. Within this sanctuary, the clownfish can thrive, sheltered by its host.
Clownfish, in turn, bring benefits to the sea anemones. By swimming around the anemone, they create water currents that help it take in oxygen. Additionally, small bits of leftover food from the clownfish act as a valuable source of nutrients for the anemone. Through this intricate balance, they sustain each other, demonstrating a remarkable example of mutual survival.
The sight of clownfish playfully darting among gently swaying corals highlights the beauty of life and the mysteries of the ocean’s ecosystems. Their vibrant colors and quiet harmony with their coral hosts are like a treasure chest of life, dazzling and timeless.

今、世界中のサンゴ研究者が注目している問いです。
サンゴの熱への耐性を検証した研究や、高水温に晒されたサンゴの繁殖能力を検証した研究など、さまざまなアプローチで、海水温が上昇した海でサンゴがどうなるのかが調べられています。
そのような状況の中、深場がサンゴの避難場所として機能しているのではないか、という議論が交わされているのです。
