Battles are turn-based, but introduced to the series is the Active Time Battle (ATB) concept, which forces players to be quick with their decision-making because, despite the turn-based nature of the title, enemies can attack at brief intervals.
The characters themselves are divided into classes and possess specific attributes and skills. Known as the "Easytype," the original US release excluded particular items, abilities, and spells, all of which have been restored for this release, dubbed "Hardtype." As part of the update, new FMV cutscenes are interjected throughout the game.

The First 15 Minutes of サムライスピリッツ: 剣客指南パック - Samurai Spirits (PlayStation)
Copied from PlayStation DataCenter:
Samurai Spirits: Kenkaku Shinan Pack is a compilation only released in Japan that includes the first two Samurai Spirits games.
Samurai Spirits, known as Samurai Shodown in the West, is a 1993 competitive fighting game produced by SNK for their Neo Geo arcade and home platform. In contrast to other fighting games at the time which were set in modern times and focused primarily on hand-to-hand combat, Samurai Shodown is set in feudal-era Japan and was one of the first fighting games to focus primarily on weapon-based combat.
In early Japan, a man named Shiro Tokisada Amakusa preaches a heretic religion. Little does anyone know that Amakusa is really a servant of the evil Ambrosia, who took over Amakusa's body. Ambrosia wishes to shroud the world in darkness. Now, choose between 12 warriors (and 3 bonus characters) to fight for the honor of destroying Amakusa, and fulfilling a mission.

Copied from PlayStation DataCenter:
Samurai Spirits: Kenkaku Shinan Pack is a compilation only released in Japan that includes the first two Samurai Spirits games.
One of SNK's legendary fighting game series has made a return! In True Samurai Spirits, known as Samurai Shodown II in the West, you can take on one of the roles of 15 warriors as you fight your way through the land to defeat the evil Mizuki! Slash, kick, and slice your opponents in half...do whatever it takes...live by the sword, and die by its blade.
The First 15 Minutes of サムライスピリッツ: 斬紅郎無双剣 (PlayStation, Samurai Shodown III)
Copied from PlayStation DataCenter:
The third incarnation of the 2D fighting game Samurai Shodown is now available on the PlayStation with the release of Samurai Shodown III: Blades of Blood, known in Japan as Samurai Spirits: Zankuro Musouken. The game revolves around the evil Zankuro Minazuki. Zankuro ravaged lands, tortured innocent people, and burned villages to the ground. Rightfully nicknamed "The Demon," Zakuro attacked hundreds of people, becoming famous for his extreme brutality.
Now 12 mighty warriors search for the crazed Zankuro, each with their own agenda or reason for wanting to kill him.
Samurai Shodown III differs from its predecessors in the two fighting styles available for each character: slash and bust. Each style is symbolic of the light and dark sides to the characters' personalities, and gives players access to different moves and an almost entirely different way of stringing together combos and special attacks.
The First 15 Minutes of ヒカルの碁: 平安幻想異聞録 (PlayStation, Hikaru no Go: Heian Gensou Ibunroku)
Copied from PlayStation DataCenter:
Hikaru no Go is a manga series written by Yumi Hotta and illustrated by Takeshi Obata. The manga is largely responsible for popularizing Go amongst the youth of Japan, and in other areas.
The basic storyline is that while exploring his grandfather's shed, Hikaru stumbles across a Go board haunted by the spirit of Fujiwara-no-Sai, a Go player from the Heian era, who's greatest desire is to attain the Kami-no-Itte, a perfect game. Because Hikaru is apparently the only person who can perceive him, Sai inhabits a part of Hikaru's mind as a separate personality.
Heian Gensou Ibunroku (Heian Fantasy Chronicles) is an alternate story set in Japan's Heian period. The ghost/demon world is invading the physical, and before you can destroy each invader you must defeat them in a game of Go. To find where the invader will be, you choose moves on an enchanted Go board in the temple.
The First 15 Minutes of 幕末浪漫: 月華の剣士 (PlayStation, The Last Blade)
Copied from PlayStation DataCenter:
The Last Blade (Bakumatsu Roman: Gekka no Kenshin), is a fighting game series created by SNK for the Neo Geo system. The Last Blade and its sequel are widely considered to be two of the most accomplished games available for the Neo Geo system.
The game takes place during the late Tokugawa shogunate era in Japan, and incorporates various elements of Japanese mythology. As such, the background music generally incorporates synthesized instruments simulating a sound appropriate to the 19th century setting, in a Western classical, pseudo-Romantic style.
The Last Blade series is seen as a spiritual successor to SNK's Samurai Shodown series, due to it being a similar 2D weapons-based fighting game. The gameplay is characterised by two selectable fighting styles, and a unique combo system along with a "deflect" system which involves pressing the D button at an opponents attack. Upon deflecting, the opponent is left open to attack.
