Only three airlines, led by national carrier Thai Airways, flew to Thai destinations from Don Muang, which at its peak saw 80 airlines operating 160,000 flights and handling over 38 million passengers in 2005.Other Thai airlines said they would continue to operate from the new airport because it handled both international and domestic flights.Suvarnabhumi, which means "Golden Land" is the largest airport in Southeast Asia, with an annual capacity of 45 million passengers. Thailand hoped it would quickly emerge as a serious regional rival to Hong Kong and Singapore. Don Muang's domestic terminal will now handle 140 flights with estimated 18,000 passengers a day.
