　二人が知りあったのは、青年の夏休みのアルバイトからだった。彼女はそのビルの一階にある喫茶店のウエイトレスをしていた。そして青年は、同じビルの四階と五階に広いフロアをもつ電器会社に、夏休みのあいだだけ雇われたということだった。
　彼女は、よく彼の話をしたがった。「あの人はね、とっても可哀そうなの」「なんでもお母さんが継母で、お父さんは死んじゃってて……」
　二人の間を冷やかされると、彼女は真っ赤になって怒った。
