時は鬼が跳梁(ちょうりょう)跋扈(ばっこ)する平安時代
人の心の闇である妬み、恨み、嫉みはやがて鬼となり、それを生み出した人を襲うようになっていた。

事態を重く見た時の帝は、大陰陽師である賀茂忠行に都の鬼を一掃するよう命じた。
賀茂忠行は日本中から、能力の高い子供を集め陰陽師として育て、鬼退治をさせる事になる。
やがて、数多の弟子の中に、他の弟子たちとは比べ物にならない能力を持つ若者が現れた。
それが安倍晴明(あべのせいめい)と蘆屋道満(あしやどうまん)である。

しかし、晴明はその能力の高さゆえ「あの力は、狐の子ゆえではないか？」と陰口を叩かれていた。
また、当時の京都では僧侶と陰陽師の両者は、共に鬼退治を命じられていたことから敵対関係にあり、
僧侶の術も使える蘆屋道満(あしやどうまん)も弟子たちの中で孤立していた。

鬼を殺せば、殺すほど、人から避けられてゆく二人だが、
大江山の酒天童子(しゅてんどうじ)を退治した名将 源頼光だけは、陰となり日向となり彼らを庇護するようになっていた。
そんなある日、京の都に妖狐(ようこ)が現れるようになる。

妖狐(ようこ)は鬼を喰らう神獣でもあるが、人の心を鬼ごと喰らってしまうアヤカシでもあった。
人に狐は倒せない・・・。
人は戦う時、必ず心に鬼を生み出してしまう。
それは陰陽師も同じこと・・・。
むしろ、心の鬼を術に乗せ鬼を討つ。
まさに毒をもって毒を制すのが陰陽道である。
ゆえに、鬼を喰らう妖狐(ようこ)は、例え陰陽師であっても手出しはできない。
倒そうとした瞬間に生まれる鬼を、心ごと妖狐(ようこ)に喰らわれてしまうからである。

しかし、ある日、安倍晴明(あべのせいめい)は一匹の妖狐(ようこ)を殺せてしまう。
それが、さらに晴明に暗い影を落とすことになる。
