　今回取り上げた映画は次の4本。いずれもわれわれが深く考えずに当たり前だと信じて疑わない物事の表面と、その裏にある真実との隔たりが生み出す不条理を描いた秀作だ。
・『陪審員２番』（クリント・イーストウッド監督）
・『聖なるイチジクの種』（モハマド・ラスロフ監督）
・『教皇選挙』（エドワード・ベルガー監督）
・『それでも私は Though I'm his daughter』（長塚洋監督）

　『陪審員２番』はクリント・イーストウッドの最後の映画とも言われている作品で、恋人を殺害した容疑で罪に問われたジェームズ・サイスという男の裁判で陪審員を務めることになった主人公のジャスティン・ケンプが、そうとは気づかずにこの事件の被害者を車で轢いてしまったのが自分なのだという確信を深めていき、葛藤する物語。しかもケンプにとって都合がいいことに、被疑者のサイスは日頃から言動が粗暴だったことから、陪審員の多くはサイスを犯人だと決めつけていた。素行が悪いからというバイアスによって有罪評決に落ち着いてしまう不条理な集団心理を克明に描くとともに、そもそも陪審員の中に真犯人がいるという事態を想定していない司法の破綻が描かれている。しかし、そこはイーストウッドだ。最後に人間とはどうあるべきかという問いを突きつけてくる。

　『聖なるイチジクの種』は、イラン人のモハマド・ラスロフ監督が命を危険に晒してイランの現体制の問題をえぐった渾身の作品。逮捕や検閲を避けるために監督がリモートで指揮を執り、映像を秘密裏に国外に持ち出して編集されたという曰く付きの秀作だ。22歳のクルド人女性マフサ・アミニさんがヒジャブを適切に着用していなかったとして2022年に逮捕され、亡くなった事件をきっかけに、反政府デモが過熱するイランが舞台だ。妻や2人の娘と暮らす主人公のイマンは、裁判所に勤務する中、予審判事に昇進し、反政府デモの参加者に不当な刑罰を下すことを強いられるようになった。始めはそれに罪悪感を持ち苦しんでいるように見えたイマンだが、物語が展開していくにつれ、家族に対してさえ監視や統制を強めようとしていく。リベラルのふりをして実は職場でのポジション取りに執着する人物だったことが徐々に露わになる。現在のイランの人権を無視した神権政治体制を批判しつつも、その中で生きる人間像を通して、根本的な人間の価値とは何かを問いかけている。

　たまたまフランシスコ教皇の死去とタイミングが重なったことで異例の注目を集めている映画『教皇選挙』では、カトリック教会の新教皇を選出する選挙で、枢機卿たちが次期教皇の座を巡って様々な駆け引きをする様が描かれる。賄賂の受け渡しや対立候補を陥れるための策略に奔走する枢機卿たちは、宗教的な存在のように見えて実は誰よりも世俗的だ。一方、教皇選挙の進行を任された主人公のローレンス枢機卿は、カトリック教会の信仰が形骸化していることに疑念を持っており、そのような考えを持った自分は次期教皇にはふさわしくないと考えていた。ここでも現状のカトリック教会のあり方に疑念を持つローレンス枢機卿が神の目から見れば実は最も宗教的な存在だという反転が描かれている。

　一見すると粗野で乱暴に見える人物が、実は公共的な精神を持ち、時に法を破ってでも目の前の人や社会的弱者を救おうとする存在だったということがある。逆に、善人に見えても実はポジション取りにばかり固執する人間だったということもある。この3作品はそのようなモチーフが共通して描かれている。われわれがそれを見抜く力をつけるためには、経験と教養が不可欠だ。

　最後に取り上げたのは、オウム真理教の教祖、麻原彰晃（松本智津夫）の三女・松本麗華さんを6年にわたり追いかけたドキュメンタリー映画『それでも私は Though I'm his daughter』だ。1995年の地下鉄サリン事件当時12歳だった麗華さんは、加害者の家族だという理由だけで銀⾏⼝座の開設まで拒絶され、大学に合格しても入学を断られる。裁判所の命令によりようやく大学入学が認められたが、その後も定職に就くことを拒否され、⼈並みの⽣活を営むことができないでいた。しかし、どんなに凶悪な犯罪の首謀者だったとしても、麗華さんは子どもだった頃の自分には優しかった父親に対しては複雑な感情を抱いていた。事件の真相が十分に解明されないまま2018年に心神喪失状態にある麻原の死刑が執行されてしまったことで、自分の父親がなぜあのような凶悪な犯罪を引き起こしてしまったのかが明らかにならなかったことについて、麗華さん自身が深い悲しみと絶望に沈む姿が記録されている。映画は、二度と同じような事件が起こらないために必要だった真相解明の機会が失われたことの重みを改めて問いかけている。

　物事の背後にある真実や、人間の内面に潜む本質に敏感になるためには何が必要か。4つの映画作品を題材にジャーナリストの神保哲生と社会学者の宮台真司が議論した。

　『聖なるイチジクの種』は、イラン人のモハマド・ラスロフ監督が命を危険に晒してイランの現体制の問題をえぐった渾身の作品。逮捕や検閲を避けるために監督がリモートで指揮を執り、映像を秘密裏に国外に持ち出して編集されたという曰く付きの秀作だ。22歳のクルド人女性マフサ・アミニさんがヒジャブを適切に着用していなかったとして2022年に逮捕され、亡くなった事件をきっかけに、反政府デモが過熱するイランが舞台だ。妻や2人の娘と暮らす主人公のイマンは、裁判所に勤務する中、予審判事に昇進し、反政府デモの参加者に不当な刑罰を下すことを強いられるようになった。始めはそれに罪悪感を持ち苦しんでいるように見えたイマンだが、物語が展開していくにつれ、家族に対してさえ監視や統制を強めようとしていく。リベラルのふりをして実は職場でのポジション取りに執着する人物だったことが徐々に露わになる。現在のイランの人権を無視した神権政治体制を批判しつつも、その中で生きる人間像を通して、根本的な人間の価値とは何かを問いかけている。

　たまたまフランシスコ教皇の死去とタイミングが重なったことで異例の注目を集めている映画『教皇選挙』では、カトリック教会の新教皇を選出する選挙で、枢機卿たちが次期教皇の座を巡って様々な駆け引きをする様が描かれる。賄賂の受け渡しや対立候補を陥れるための策略に奔走する枢機卿たちは、宗教的な存在のように見えて実は誰よりも世俗的だ。一方、教皇選挙の進行を任された主人公のローレンス枢機卿は、カトリック教会の信仰が形骸化していることに疑念を持っており、そのような考えを持った自分は次期教皇にはふさわしくないと考えていた。ここでも現状のカトリック教会のあり方に疑念を持つローレンス枢機卿が神の目から見れば実は最も宗教的な存在だという反転が描かれている。

　一見すると粗野で乱暴に見える人物が、実は公共的な精神を持ち、時に法を破ってでも目の前の人や社会的弱者を救おうとする存在だったということがある。逆に、善人に見えても実はポジション取りにばかり固執する人間だったということもある。この3作品はそのようなモチーフが共通して描かれている。われわれがそれを見抜く力をつけるためには、経験と教養が不可欠だ。

　最後に取り上げたのは、オウム真理教の教祖、麻原彰晃（松本智津夫）の三女・松本麗華さんを6年にわたり追いかけたドキュメンタリー映画『それでも私は Though I'm his daughter』だ。1995年の地下鉄サリン事件当時12歳だった麗華さんは、加害者の家族だという理由だけで銀⾏⼝座の開設まで拒絶され、大学に合格しても入学を断られる。裁判所の命令によりようやく大学入学が認められたが、その後も定職に就くことを拒否され、⼈並みの⽣活を営むことができないでいた。しかし、どんなに凶悪な犯罪の首謀者だったとしても、麗華さんは子どもだった頃の自分には優しかった父親に対しては複雑な感情を抱いていた。事件の真相が十分に解明されないまま2018年に心神喪失状態にある麻原の死刑が執行されてしまったことで、自分の父親がなぜあのような凶悪な犯罪を引き起こしてしまったのかが明らかにならなかったことについて、麗華さん自身が深い悲しみと絶望に沈む姿が記録されている。映画は、二度と同じような事件が起こらないために必要だった真相解明の機会が失われたことの重みを改めて問いかけている。

　物事の背後にある真実や、人間の内面に潜む本質に敏感になるためには何が必要か。4つの映画作品を題材にジャーナリストの神保哲生と社会学者の宮台真司が議論した。
