これはセシル・シャープが編纂した「100のイングランド古謡」に収録されている1曲です。セシル・シャープはイギリス各地に伝わる古謡を収集し、楽譜に書き起こしてピアノ伴奏を付けました。この動画も彼の楽譜に従っていますが、伴奏はハープとしています。
拙訳は私です(正確である保証はありません)。詠み人は分かりませんが、バリエーションがあるようであり、たとえば歌詞の3番は別の文献では以下のようになっています、
