In this world, death is no longer final. This is thanks to the Mysteri Group, a corporation that has invented the Soul Cloud, a large network of servers that can store the memories and even the soul of the deceased. People may now live on in the Soul Cloud after their death, and their loved ones may visit and communicate with them.

In Master Reboot, the player controls a newcomer to the Soul Cloud, whose upload has somehow gone awry. This person is now without their memories, and must explore the Soul Cloud to find out who they are and what led to their upload, all while being stalked by a rogue security program called seren.exe. By solving puzzles and collecting memories throughout the game's 34 environments, the player can solve the mysteries of what happened to the main character and seren.

本制度は、愛情供給値の不均衡によって生じる急性老化症（ALS／Affective Lack Syndrome）の進行を防ぐために設けられた。
研究の結果、個体の記憶の連続性が老化進行率に大きく寄与することが確認された。MHCは、過去の愛情記憶を一定量保持している個体ほど、供給値の変動が安定し、老化の進行が通常よりも 顕著に遅延することを報告している。

一方で、記憶喪失・改竄・愛着対象の消失などにより記憶連続性が断絶した場合、供給値は急降下し、不可逆的な劣化過程に突入する。
そのため、記憶消失を防ぐ目的で「記憶安定化補助装置（MAU：Memory Assist Unit）」の使用が義務付けられた。
装置は個体の神経網に直接接続され、主要な愛着記録を自動的に保存・再生する。
ただし、過剰な再生は 幻覚・幻聴・人格分裂などの副作用を引き起こす事例が報告されている。

一部の市民は装置の使用を拒否し、過去の記憶を保持したまま老化・崩壊したとされる。

その者たちは俗に「オイテイク者（The Left Ones）」と呼ばれる。
彼らは、生きながら時間においていかれることを選んだ最後の人間たちである。
