「ハリング」はノルウェー舞踊ですが、この曲は伝統的なノルウェー舞踊とは少々雰囲気の異なる曲です。
日本の琴を連想させるようなフレーズがあります。日本政府がウィーン万博で大規模な展示を行ったのが1873年で、そこでは日本の楽器も紹介されていました。その後もいくつかの万博に日本は出展しています。グリーグはあちこち演奏旅行しており、これが作曲されたのが1883年ですから、どこかで日本の音楽を聴いたかもしれません。
