Feb. 5 - Four months after the opening of Bangkok's new Suvarnabhumi airport, the four million USD facility has been hit with structural problems and accusations of corruption.In addition to leaks in the terminal building, excessive heat inside and slow baggage handling, the biggest problem is now on the asphalt taxiways.Depressions and faults have spread to six percent of the paved area between the terminal and the taxiways forcing some parking bays to be closed. Ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra's opponents in the army-appointed government appear determined that he take the blame amid accusations of corruption. In an effort to relieve congestion, authorities plan to reopen Don Muang airport which is expected to be ready within 45 days.
Thai PM seeks forgiveness with south (2006.11.08)
Nov. 8 - Thai Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont took a second trip in a month to rebellious Muslim south, appealing to youths to help end the almost three-year insurgency.Surayud visited a public college and a private Islamic school in Yala province, accused by security forces as a breeding ground for insurgents. He asked the students and teachers to be patriotic and vowed justice for those under the government's "blacklists". Since assuming power, Surayud has worked to reverse Thaksin's hardline policies on the region bordering Malaysia and home to most of predominately Buddhist Thailand's six million Muslims.

Jan. 5 - Army-installed Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont has warned of more bomb attacks following the deaths of three people and 38 wounded on New Year's eve.His comments are likely to keep the 9 million inhabitants of the sprawling capital on edge after a string of bomb hoaxes and scares since the New Year Eve attacks. Thai media reported false alarms at a government office and major shopping mall.
