"Fear of Heights" is an introspective synth‑pop track (aren't they all) built on subtle retro‑influenced textures (aren't they all -- maybe just assume this is a theme), steady percussion, and, um, emotionally restrained vocal synthesis™. The song explores emotional vertigo, no less, and the way another person can completely disarm your confidence. I'm not sure that's a thing but it's what I've written about.

Technically, there's a host of sounds: from the properly retro Mini-Moog, Jupiter 8, Emulator II, Synclavier, ARP 2600, Juno 60 ... the ironically-modern Retrologue, and just-modern Halion X-Stream. Vocals crafted using Vocaloid6's Aya and Asa. UADs Galaxy Tape Echo gets a debut following their generous giveaway.

In a similar vein to 10cc's song, penned some time back, this track is also about "the things we do for love". Unlike that 70s number, this song's a bit wonky in terms of structure, which fits the track's intent too. I wasn't sure about the piano coda but it cross-faded nicely into the next track so I kept it!

楽曲は「ZUN's_Music_Collection」の第5.5より「未知の花 魅知の旅」になります。終盤の転調後の盛り上がりがすごく好き。

The song built whilst doodling with sounds from the Full Bucket emulators -- e.g. https://www.fullbucket.de/music/paralogy.html -- lots of retro subtractive synthesis goodness. These framed the [spoiler alert] alarm sounds through the intro and the track spluttered into life (hopefully) from there. It paints a brief picture (ha, ha) of an artist trying to put their model at ease. There were more verses fluffing out the story but, thankfully, I didn't think the song needed them.

Although the Reason instruments are all individually routable to Cubase -- as are the effects via VST -- sometimes it's just easier to stitch together at source. 今回はタイトルBGMを再現してみました。

東方の曲にしてはかなり珍しくSD系の音色が一切使用されていません。

また、今作では初登場の新しいストリングスの音色が多用されています。
ですが、残念ながら現在の所ストリングスの音色は発見できていません。
今回は近い音色で代用しています。

The song started life as sonic doodles using the Numanesque 1979 synth emulators -- so if you think it's 80s, you're a year out! Vocals from Vocaloid's Taku and Jessica ... with a smidgen of step-filter.

Tech Notes
⚠ Warning: do not operate heavy machinery whilst reading

The retro simulator VSTs are from fullbucket.de -- they've been nicely stable within Cubase (I'm a bit precious about polluting the DAW with rogue plug-ins).
A Paralogy emulator mimics a Crumar Trilogy in the intro; the sweep sound is the Ny simulator (Korg Lambda); A Korg DW-8000 emulator (FB-7999) fills in the chorus bass line. There's a Reason synth bass (Europa), and UAD bass (PolyMax) in there too. The bass components are largely side-chained from the drums to keep them under some semblance of control.
The resonant sweep melody is from Reason's Thor; pads from PolyMax and Cubase's Padshop. And Retrologue.

I had hoped to use the Drumtraqs emulator (also fullbucket.de) ... but they didn't settle 🤷‍♂️ ... so swapped for Backbone soundset (and "impact" noises from there too).

TL; DR: this is a synth-pop track about being true to yourself.

Before writing, for the last couple of days of January, I'd been listening to Pete Shelley's "Homosapien"¹, on repeat, like a deranged teenager. The idea was to overdose on a song I liked, so that the song's structure or ambience or intent would then seep -- osmosis style -- into my next creation. I'm not sure it has but I like the process.

Anyway, this track is about being true to yourself; being comfortable with your dubious decisions.

Technically, the drum sounds are from Groove Agent with some added Backbone sourced hi-hats. The various brass instruments are from NN-XT samples. Other synths from Thor and filtered, sampled sawtooth waves (NN19), stock Cubase Retrologue, Halion, Padshop in there too. Vocals are from the Vocaloid6 set -- hello, Allen and Sandra; their formant glitchiness tempered by EQ & saturation.
