カワウは、カツオドリ目ウ科に分類される、全長（くちばしから尾まで）80cm以上、体重は2-3kg程の大型の鳥です。名前の通りおもに河川や湖沼に生息します。近年個体数が増えていて、全国の池や川周辺の木や岩、岸などで休んでいる姿を見ることができますがこちらに気づくと比較的遠くから水中に潜ってしまう、あるいは翼を羽ばたきながら水面で助走をつけて水上機のように豪快に飛び立って逃げてしまうため、間近で観察できることはあまりないかもしれません。この理由は、彼らの食性に大きく関係しています。

カワウは完全魚食性で、獲物は潜水して追いかけて捕まえます。そのため、潜水にとても特化した体に進化しています。例えば、足は太く短く、全ての趾（鳥の足の指）に水かきがあり、また胴体の後部に位置しているので、より速く、効率よく水中を泳げるようになっています。船のプロペラが船体の後ろについているのと同じです。さらに、普通の鳥は羽に油を塗って水をはじくようにしていますが、ウの仲間は浮力を減らし、より早く泳ぐため、羽は水をあまりはじかないようになっています。そのため水から上がってもびっしょり濡れたままになってしまいます。ウを観察すると水面に浮かぶ岩や木の上で羽を広げている姿をよく見かけますが、これは濡れて重くなってしまった羽を乾かすための行動です。このようにウの仲間は潜水することに特化したあまり、陸上での移動や飛び立ちがあまり得意ではないため、外敵が近づいた場合早めに安全な場所に移動するのです。
また、カワウは餌となる魚への水産被害から害鳥として見られてきた歴史があり、このこともカワウが人を嫌がりすぐ逃げてしまう理由のようです。

カワウは分布域が非常に広く、南アメリカ以外のすべての大陸に生息しています。このように世界的に分布する種を、汎存種（cosmopolitan species）といいます。汎存種は、ほかには人やシャチ、鳥類ではアマサギ、ハヤブサ、ミサゴなどがあげられます。（山階鳥類研究所　油田照秋フォト解説より）
