国際自然保護連合（IUCN）は9日、絶滅危惧種をまとめた「レッドリスト（Red List of Threatened Species）」を更新し、マダガスカルに生息する皿のように丸い目が特徴の小型霊長類、キツネザルのほぼ全種が絶滅の危機に直面していると警告した。
マダガスカルに生息するキツネザル107種のうち、103種が絶滅の危機にひんしており、うち33種は「野生絶滅種」一歩手前の「近絶滅種」に分類されるという。今回の更新で「近絶滅種」に加えられたのは、世界最小の霊長類マダムベルテネズミキツネザルや、地上を跳びはねて移動するベローシファカなどの種。
キツネザルは、インド洋に浮かぶマダガスカルに固有の多くの貴重な種の一つだ。しかし貧困状態にある同国は、森林破壊や食用目的の密猟、飼育向けの違法動物取引との闘いに苦慮している。マダガスカルの森林の40％以上が1950年代から2000年にかけて失われた。
レッドリストは12万372種を調査し、3万種以上を絶滅の危機にあると分類している。IUCNはリストの更新に際し、人類と自然界の関わり方を根本的に見直すよう呼びかけた。
IUCNの報告書によると、アフリカの他の地域では野生動物の狩猟と生息地の消失により、霊長類の53％に当たる103種中54種が絶滅の危機にひんしている。
IUCNの職員は、新型コロナウイルスのパンデミック（世界的な大流行）が経済に与えた打撃のせいで、一部の貧しいコミュニティーは「日々の生活のために天然資源に頼らざるを得ない」と述べた。
同じく「近絶滅種」に加えられたタイセイヨウセミクジラの2018年末の成体の個体数は、2011年より約15％減少し、250頭以下と推定されている。
気候変動の影響でクジラは夏の間北上し、カナダ・セントローレンス湾（Gulf of St Lawrence）まで移動するようになったとみられる。湾では船に衝突したり、カニ捕獲用の網にからまったりする恐れが高まるようだ。
