Thai PM seeks forgiveness with south (2006.11.08)

Nov. 8 - Thai Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont took a second trip in a month to rebellious Muslim south, appealing to youths to help end the almost three-year insurgency.Surayud visited a public college and a private Islamic school in Yala province, accused by security forces as a breeding ground for insurgents. He asked the students and teachers to be patriotic and vowed justice for those under the government's "blacklists". Since assuming power, Surayud has worked to reverse Thaksin's hardline policies on the region bordering Malaysia and home to most of predominately Buddhist Thailand's six million Muslims.

The campaign motto "Back to Eden, Close All Zoos" was printed in English and Thai on two separate 12 X 24-inch posters which were used to cover the model's more intimate parts as they posed as Adam and Eve in a highly stylized virtual jungle paradise. 26-year-old Ribbsaeter is among Asia's heartthrobs while model Siwa is currently at an all time high with her career as a TV host and actress.People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) who sponsored the campaign said they will launch the images in several countries in Asia and Europe in protest against zoo captivity.

Only three airlines, led by national carrier Thai Airways, flew to Thai destinations from Don Muang, which at its peak saw 80 airlines operating 160,000 flights and handling over 38 million passengers in 2005.Other Thai airlines said they would continue to operate from the new airport because it handled both international and domestic flights.Suvarnabhumi, which means "Golden Land" is the largest airport in Southeast Asia, with an annual capacity of 45 million passengers. Thailand hoped it would quickly emerge as a serious regional rival to Hong Kong and Singapore. Don Muang's domestic terminal will now handle 140 flights with estimated 18,000 passengers a day.

Apr. 11 - Thailand's annual Songkran water festival kicks off in the ancient city of Ayutthaya two days early. Locals, tourists and elephants joined in the wet festivities. The Songkran water festival, which officially starts on Friday, takes place at the end of the dry season -- the hottest time of the year when temperatures can soar to over 40 degrees Celsius and a cool soaking is often welcome relief. Many countries have advised their citizens to exercise a high degree of caution if visiting Thailand over the Songkran holiday weekend because of threats of terrorist attacks. Thai police have said they will deploy extra manpower in Bangkok for the Thai New Year celebrations to prevent a repeat of the serial blasts of Dec. 31 that killed three people.
