新書『教養としてのプログラミング講座』は、これまでに全くなかった形の書籍である。一言で言えば、コンピュータの伝統的なプログラミング言語、CやJavaやJavaScriptといった類いの一般的な言語や、高度な数学的知識を一切用いることなしに書かれた、プログラミングの本、ということになる。プログラムとは、ギリシャ語で「公にかかれたもの」に由来する。祭典などの宗教的儀式や、組織の管理運営といった文明の発展に欠かなかったものがプログラムであり、人類の叡智そのものであると言える。それがコンピュータの発明によって我々一般庶民にも手が届くようになったことで、プログラミングという思考様式が広まりつつある。今やプログラミングは21世紀の人類にとってなくてはならない教養のひとつと言えるだろう。本イベントでは、本書にまつわる話題を振り返りつつ、ページの都合上盛り込むことが出来なかった話題も紹介していく。
