1948年、フロリダ州ゲインズビル生まれのニューヨークはブロンクス育ち
1962年、14歳のときに観たジェイムス・ブラウンのパフォーマンスに衝撃を受け、以来歌手を志し
料理人としてさまざまな土地で働きながら、何十年も仕事の合間を縫ってシンガーとして活動。
Daptone Recordsの創設者であるゲイブリエル・ロスとの出会いが転機となり、
Daptone傘下Dunham Recordsから2007年にシングル“The World (Is Going up In Flames)”を発表。
それから3年以上の月日が経ち、ようやく2011年に62歳でデビュー・アルバムのリリースに至った。
