There are happy songs … and then there’s this... “Generation Ship” is downright depressing. It’s a first person narrative from the perspective of a co-dependent domestic abuse victim. The song was not originally composed with this theme in mind but as time went on it sort of fell into place as they say. It is not about anyone in particular but rather an indictment on domestic abuse in general.Technically this song is polyrhythmic, combining 4/4 and 9/8 time signatures. There are also hip hop beats and even Risset tones. The background voices are not real, they are from domestic abuse community videos. There is a limited selection of samples but they are triggered randomly. The entire composition is quite dynamically flat and repetitive to enhance the subject matter.
