'86年にリリースされ、「ビルボード1位を獲得した史上初のラップ作品」「ロック感覚溢れる白人ラップを開拓した名盤」として、今なお高い人気を誇る1st「Licensed To Ill」収録！同時期に「Def Jamからリック・ルービンのプロデュースでアルバムを出した」という関係から、スレイヤーのケリー・キングがリード・ギターを担当、PVでも客演している。それにしても、ヒップホップ史上に残る傑作とメタル史上に残る傑作(Slayerの"Raign In Blood")をほぼ同時にプロデュースしたリック・ルービンという男、彼の素晴らしいセンスには脱帽だ。

Pharrell Williams - Frontin' (Chris Read's Jazz Mix)
I don't usually bother posting a lone track on this page unless it was commissioned for a label or project of some sort, but in this case I'm making an exception. This track is up here in part because it was largely overlooked the first time I posted it and in part just because I fancied having a crack at imitating the style of the Blue Note cover art of Reid Miles. (I'm no designer but like to play around with these things). Anyhow, the track is a remix of Pharrell's 2003 hit 'Frontin' using passages from British Jazz pianist / singer Jamie Cullum's cover version of the same song. I loved the instrumentation on Jamie's version but not particularly his voice so I used samples from his cover and a Neptunes-esque drum track that I put together to produce a remix with Pharrell's original vocal. Works on the dancefloor and has, arguably, a slightly more tasteful feel than the original.
