Like all games in the series, this game features mythical versions of various generals and other figures as playable characters. Compared to previous entries, the move to new hardware allows 3D graphics for the first time; player sprites stay sprite-based, like in older entries, but stages are now presented using realtime 3D art. Each character features unique special moves and super moves. This game also features a new "rebirth" system; players build a "rebirth" meter as they take damage and, once full, they can repeatedly revive themselves for a short window of time.
