「洗濯物をラックに掛けるときに、最初のシャツを右向きに掛けても左向きに掛けても構いませんが、一度右向きにしてしまうと、何となく次のシャツ も右向きに掛けたくなり、最後には全てのシャツが右向きに並んでいる、ということがあります。つまり、右と左を入れ替える「対称性」が「自発的に破れて」 しまいます。「対称性」とは「どちらでも同じ、構わない」こと、しかし全体を見ると（なぜか）自然とどちらかを選んでしまっていることが「自発的対称性の 破れ」です。同じように人間に右利きが多いのも、心臓が左側にあるのも、本来どちらでも良かったはずで、生物の進化の中で自発的に対称性が破れてきた結果 です。中性子星の内部、実験室の超流動・超伝導物質、冷却した原子のガス、そして宇宙に満ちるヒッグス粒子も、自発的対称性の破れの例で、この考え方は 様々な分野の研究に大きな影響を与えて来ました。」

「液体の水と結晶の氷でどのような違いがあるでしょうか。液体の水の分子には定まった位置はなく、左右前後に動かしてもなにも変わりません。これ を、「空間の並進対称性」といいます。しかし、氷は水分子がきれいに立方体に並んだ結晶で、一つ一つの分子には決まった位置があります。つまり水にあった 並進対称性が、氷では自発的に破れています。先程の左右の対称性と違い、並進は「少しずつ滑らかに」動かすことができる、「連続的」な対称性です。こうした連続的な対称性が自発的に破れた場合、エネルギーが極わずかで、遠くまで届く波がある、というのが南部理論です。（中略）このように、連続的な対称性が自発的に破れると、破れた対称性に応じて、波が作れます。ミクロな世界の量子力学では波と粒子は同じなので、これを 「南部・ゴールドストーン粒子」といいます。南部理論は、破れた対称性の数だけ南部・ゴールドストーン粒子がある、と指摘したのです。」
