 南米コロンビアにあるアマゾン（Amazon）熱帯雨林の一角に、先住民に親を奪われたサルの孤児たちに新たな生活を開く保護施設がある。
先住民の居住区、モカグア（Mocagua）にあるこの「サルの孤児院」を運営するのは、地元指導者のジョン・ハイロ・バスケス（Jhon Jairo Vasquez）さん（38）。
マルハと名付けられた生後3か月の雌のウーリーモンキーにとって、バスケスさんは父親代わり。この「親子」は今や、分かち難い関係を築いている。
「私が父で、この子が娘」と語るバスケスさん。「母親は、先住民の一家が食べてしまった」
昔からウーリーモンキーの肉と毛皮は珍重され、先住民の猟師らの格好の獲物となってきた。今では、国際自然保護連合（IUCN）の「レッドリスト（Red List of Threatened Species）」で「絶滅危惧II類」に分類されている。
マルハのような幼いウーリーモンキーは、ペット用として捕らえられることが多く、その過程で母親が殺されることもある。
バスケスさんは2006年以降、モカグアの先住民チクナ（Tikuna）に対し、乱獲や横行する違法な野生動物取引の悪影響を理解してもらおうと努力してきた。
当初消極的だったチクナの人々も、エコツーリズムに関心を示すようになった。「改心した」猟師らは、今では野生動物を保護するガイドになったと、バスケスさんは語る。
それでもこの孤児院には、心に傷を負った子ザルがアマゾンの他の場所から引き続きやってくる。バスケスさんによると、同院設立以降「リハビリ」を受けたサルは約800匹に上るという。
子ザルたちはこの孤児院で、母親に教えてもらうことができなかった森の中の歩き方や、群れでの移動を学ぶと、ここを去っていく。
バスケスさんはこう語る。「姿が見えなくなると分かる、あの子もリハビリが終わったのだなと」
