この歌は1460年代のイギリスランカスター家とヨーク家の間で勃発した薔薇戦争が舞台で、ランカスター派のウェールズ地方の拠点であるハーレック城（ハーレフ城とも）と周辺地域の平定をエドワード４世の命をうけたハーバートが開始し、
ハーレック城自体は包囲されたり包囲を解かれたりを7年近く繰り返しながら、他のウェールズの城が陥落する中で最後まで持ちこたえたそうですが、1468年8月14日には陥落。
その時の様子を歌にしたのがこのMen of Harlechなのだそうです。

歌詞ですが、最も古い歌詞は「英語で吟遊詩人が歌っていた」代物だそうで、それを「ウェールズ語」にしたものが今回の歌詞になります。
その後、各所でこの最古のウェールズ語歌詞版を「英語+ウェールズ語」がごった煮になった状態で歌われたり、歌詞が原型を留めない形かつ「英語」で歌われたりして、もう、収拾がつかないレベルで歌詞が改定されて現在に至るそうです・・・。
（映画「ズールー戦争」で歌われている歌詞や、現在のイギリス部隊歌として歌われているのが典型的な例）
要はね、派生型の歌詞が沢山あり過ぎてわけわからんです。（笑）
