今回はアメリカ人の学者ポール・ケーラス（Paul Carus, 1852-1919）による仏教説話の小著『カルマ Karma』を読んでいきます。
鈴木貞太郎（大拙）によって日本語に翻訳され、芥川龍之介「蜘蛛の糸」の元ネタにもなった作品です。
これを通して仏教と宗教哲学、そして文学についても学んでいきましょう。
ページ数で言うと初回ほどのペースでは進みませんでしたが、いよいよ「自己は幻想である」（＝無我）という重要な仏教の教義が出てきます。

鈴木貞太郎（大拙）によって日本語に翻訳され、芥川龍之介「蜘蛛の糸」の元ネタにもなった作品です。
これを通して仏教と宗教哲学、そして文学についても学んでいきましょう。
今回で読了です。
サンスクリット語での仏教用語・仏典名がいくつも出てきましたが、これは漢訳で親しんでいる日本人に馴染みがないのは仕方ないですね。

時は数年後……で、多くの登場人物が痛い目に遭いますが、「それもすべて自分のしたことの結果」という仏教倫理が徹底されます。
そして新しく登場した若い修行僧パンタカ Panthaka が盗賊になった元奴隷のマハードゥータに教えを説く後半パートに。次回いよいよ芥川龍之介「蜘蛛の糸」の元ネタになったエピソードです。
