Her fingers gently played the keys, engrossed in the melody she was creating. Outside the window, a faint misty rain drizzled, reflecting her sorrowful face.

今回から Art in Making: Italian Painting Before 1400 の講読を通して、中世絵画（板絵）の技法について学んでいきます。
この『Art in Making』シリーズはナショナル・ギャラリー（ロンドン）が所蔵作品の研究に基づいて刊行しているもので、豊富な図版つきで古典絵画の技法についての調査研究成果が掲載されています。
とりあえず今回はもっぱら支持体である板の話。当時の北部イタリアの木材事情といった、なかなか細かい歴史的背景も絡んできます。

ルネサンス以前の画家たちなので、あまり有名でない名前が多いのかもしれませんが、その辺も解説しながらやっていこうかと。

ヨーロッパ中世の絵画といえば金箔を貼った金色の背景。
前回までで板に下地を塗るところまでやったので、今回は下地を滑らかに磨いて金箔を貼るところです。
といっても私は本を読んで解説するだけで、実演はできませんが、幸い講読しているこの本には当時の技法を再現している写真も豊富に載っていますので、それで感じを摑んでいただけたら、と。

今の絵画に金箔を貼ることは少ないのでマイナーな話題ではあったかもしれませんが。
次回はいよいよ絵具の話に入ろうと思います。

ようやく絵具の話になります。
14世紀当時の絵画なので、まだメインは油絵ではなく卵テンペラです。材料の性質に関して一部化学用語も出てきますので、それも説明しながら、油絵との比較なども補足説明を加えて進めました。

これにてこの講読は一段落。絵具のセクションを読み終えようと思って、1時間35分とやや長めになりました。
いま絵を描くにはあまり関わりないと思う技法も多いかもしれませんが、古典技法を応用している現代アーティストもいますし、技法的知識は学んでおく価値のある内容です。
