今回はマクタガートの議論への批判です。

・そもそも実在とはどのようなものと考えられており、「時間が実在しない」という証明が仮に正しいとして、それはどのようなことであるはずだったのか
・時間は「A系列」「B系列」としてしか観察されず、変化にはA系列が必要だというのは本当か
・「A系列は矛盾を含む」という証明は成功したのか

それぞれの点に問題があるのを見ていきます。
最後に物理学を専門とする方から「有意義な議論だとは思えませんでした」とのコメントがありましたが、私自身、マクタガートの議論があまり良いものだとは思っていません。ただ、このような議論が分析哲学の世界で影響力を持っていること、さらにはその根本にある問題が今なお十分に指摘されていないことは、思考の根本に関わる問題として考えておく必要があるのではないかと思って、取り上げさせていただきました。

前回パトナム「時間と物理幾何学」の議論を読みましたので、今回はそれに対する批判です。ポイントは

・同時性は実在性を導くのか
・仮にパトナムの議論に従い「未来の出来事の実在性」が認められたとして、この場合の「実在性」とは何か

の2本立てとなります。
最後に数理物理学者ロジャー・ペンローズによるパトナムを踏まえた記述も引用しました。

今回は細かい部分について視聴者から「この点をこう表現していいのか」といった指摘も多々あり、そのためいろいろと言い直したりともたついた箇所もあり、また約100分も長くもなりました。ただ、こうした指摘はありがたいことです。その分、説得力のあるものになっていればよいのですが。

今回はマクタガートへの批判を復習・整理した上で、そもそも「無矛盾律」という思考の原理そのものが無時間的な場面でもっとも明晰であり、古代ギリシアから無時間的・永遠的なものこそ真に「ある」ものだという考え方は根強く存在したことに遡ります。
「そんな古代の考え方はさすがに古代の遺物では」と思われるかもしれませんが、さにあらず、実は現在に至る物理学や数学の探究にも「プラトニズム」が生きている、という話でふたたび現在に繋げて締めです。

英語圏の有名な哲学者であったジョン・サールが2025年9月に亡くなりました。
それを受けて……には少し遅いのですが（このライブ配信は2026年3月）、彼の『MiND 心の哲学』を手引きとして、「心の哲学」という今もホットな話題について語ってみたいと思います。

この第2回も引き続き「機能主義 functionalism は科学の時代にふさわしい、科学的唯物論に沿った考え方なのか？」という問題を扱いました。
数理物理学者ロジャー・ペンローズの議論も取り上げましたが、前提となる「ゲーデルの不完全性定理」については簡潔な説明に留めているので、予備知識がないと若干難しいかもしれません（ある程度の説明はしましたが）。

機能主義の話は今回で一区切りにして、次回は「クオリア問題」などに関わるトピックを扱っていく予定です。
